Is there a weight loss clinic in Setia Alam? What a doctor-led first visit covers

Dr Ong Jin Khang · MMC 45245 · LCP holder · The Retreat Clinic, Setia Alam

Yes, The Retreat Clinic on Jalan Setia Dagang in Setia Alam, five minutes from Setia City Mall, runs doctor-led medical weight management, where a doctor assesses first and a prescription medicine is considered only after that. In the main trials of tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy), average weight loss was about 15 to 21 percent against 2 to 3 percent on placebo, and the medicines worked alongside lifestyle change with medical follow-up.

A weight visit starts with questions.

Is there a weight loss clinic in Setia Alam?

Yes. The Retreat Clinic is on Jalan Setia Dagang in Setia Alam, five minutes from Setia City Mall, and medical weight management is one of the services it runs. People search for it as a weight loss clinic, a slimming clinic in Shah Alam or, in Malay, a klinik kurus. The word that matters is the one in front of it: doctor-led means the first thing that happens is an assessment, not a product.

Slimming is a loose word that covers diets, wraps, machines and prescription medicine. Medical weight management is the doctor-prescribed end of that range. A page on where the prescription medicines can legally come from explains why that matters.

What does a doctor-led weight visit check?

It starts with the history. That means your weight over the years, what you have already tried, how you sleep and eat, your medical conditions, and every medicine and supplement you take. The Malaysian obesity guideline (2023) asks the clinician to assess associated and co-occurring conditions and the treatments that could be causing weight gain. Its list of medicine classes that may contribute includes some antidepressants, antiepileptics and mood stabilisers, antihistamines and antipsychotics, so the medicine cabinet is part of the visit.

Then come the measurements. The guideline screens with BMI and waist circumference, and for Asian adults it uses a BMI of 23 for overweight and 27.5 for obesity, with a waist of 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women. These cut-offs are set for Asian bodies, so a chart written for another population can give a different answer. Blood tests follow where the history calls for them, which is why treatment does not always start the same day.

Some visits end without a prescription. A weight that is already healthy, a plan that diet and activity can carry, or a medical condition that rules a medicine out are all valid outcomes. The longer page on what a doctor checks before prescribing lists the questions in full.

Which medicines can a doctor prescribe, and what does the evidence show?

The Malaysian guideline names five approved options for obesity: orlistat, phentermine with topiramate, naltrexone with bupropion, liraglutide 3 mg (Saxenda) and semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy). It describes medicines as an adjunct to diet, activity and behaviour, indicated at a BMI of 30 or more, or about 27 or more with a weight-related condition, and used with medical supervision. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is not in that 2023 text, and the page on tirzepatide, explained covers where it stands now.

The large trials give the scale of the effect. In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults without diabetes received tirzepatide for 72 weeks. Average weight fell by 15.0 percent on 5 mg, 19.5 percent on 10 mg and 20.9 percent on 15 mg, against 3.1 percent on placebo, and 85 to 91 percent of the tirzepatide groups lost at least 5 percent against 35 percent on placebo. In STEP 1, 1,961 adults without diabetes took semaglutide 2.4 mg or placebo, both with lifestyle support, for 68 weeks: 14.9 percent against 2.4 percent, and 86.4 percent against 31.5 percent lost at least 5 percent.

A trial average describes a group. It does not say what will happen to one person, and the people in these trials were also given lifestyle support.

Why does follow-up matter more than the first prescription?

Because the dose is not fixed on day one. These medicines start low and rise in steps, and in SURMOUNT-1 the 20-week escalation period is where most of the gastrointestinal side effects occurred. At The Retreat Clinic, Dr Ong tailors the dose and reviews weekly early on, so a step up or a pause is decided against how the body is responding rather than a calendar. The Malaysian guideline asks for medical supervision and careful monitoring for the same reason.

Follow-up is also where the plan is checked against its aim, where new symptoms are asked about, and where a new medicine from another doctor is spotted. The related page below on what a follow-up visit checks goes through the cadence and the stopping rule.

What are the side effects, and who should not have these medicines?

The common ones are digestive. In STEP 1, nausea and diarrhoea were the most frequent, and in SURMOUNT-1 adverse events led 4.3 to 7.1 percent of tirzepatide groups to stop, against 2.6 percent on placebo. Malaysian reports to NPRA show the same pattern, with nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea the most frequent of 504 local reports. The rarer ones need a plan, and the page on weight loss injection side effects sets them out by class.

In July 2026 NPRA issued a safety alert on severe acute pancreatitis across the class, 40 registered products in all. Severe, persistent abdominal pain that may spread to the back needs urgent medical attention, and the medicine is stopped if pancreatitis is suspected. The US label for tirzepatide lists a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 and serious allergy to the medicine as contraindications, and says to stop it when pregnancy is recognised. A history of pancreatitis calls for caution. These are the reasons the assessment comes first.

How do you check a weight loss clinic?

Start with the doctor. A prescription medicine should come from a registered medical practitioner who has assessed you, and the guide on how to check an aesthetic doctor in Malaysia shows how to confirm registration. Under the Poisons Act 1952, section 19, a registered medical practitioner may supply or administer a poison, other than a Group A poison, to his patient for that patient's treatment. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both Group B poisons.

Then ask four plain questions. Will a doctor examine me before anything is prescribed? Is the product registered, and can I see the MAL number on the pen or box? Who reviews me after the first injection, and how soon? What happens if I stop? A clinic that cannot answer these in plain words has told you something.

Common questions

Is there a weight loss clinic in Setia Alam?

Yes. The Retreat Clinic on Jalan Setia Dagang in Setia Alam, five minutes from Setia City Mall, runs doctor-led medical weight management. The first step is a medical assessment, and a prescription medicine is considered only if the assessment supports it.

What happens at a first visit to a slimming or weight loss clinic?

In a doctor-led visit the doctor takes a history, measures weight, BMI and waist, reviews every medicine and supplement you take and the conditions that affect weight, and orders blood tests where the history calls for them. The Malaysian obesity guideline asks for associated conditions and current treatments that could cause obesity to be assessed.

Do I need a doctor to get Mounjaro or Ozempic in Malaysia?

Yes. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are Group B poisons under the Poisons Act, so they reach a patient through a registered doctor treating that patient or a pharmacist filling a prescription. A pen from a website, chat group or listing has skipped that step.

How much weight do weight loss injections help you lose?

In SURMOUNT-1, 2,539 adults on tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for 72 weeks lost on average 15.0 to 20.9 percent of body weight against 3.1 percent on placebo. In STEP 1, 1,961 adults on semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy) for 68 weeks lost 14.9 percent against 2.4 percent. These are group averages, and one person can lose more or less.

Who should not have a weight loss injection?

The US label for tirzepatide lists a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 and serious allergy to the medicine as contraindications, and says to stop it when pregnancy is recognised. NPRA advises caution with a history of pancreatitis. A doctor checks all of this before prescribing.

Is a weight loss injection a quick fix?

No. The Malaysian obesity guideline places medicines as an adjunct to diet, activity and behaviour, with medical supervision and careful monitoring. Both main trials combined the medicine with lifestyle support.
