Rejuran vs Plinest vs Newest: what each polynucleotide booster contains and what the trials show

Dr Ong Jin Khang · MMC 45245 · LCP holder · The Retreat Clinic, Setia Alam

Rejuran, Plinest and Newest are all polynucleotide (PN) skin boosters, purified DNA fragments injected into the skin, and they differ in concentration and in whether hyaluronic acid is added. No trial has compared them head to head. All three are listed as medical devices on the Malaysian register, and the published evidence for each is small, mostly uncontrolled and often linked to its maker.

Three names, one class, no head-to-head trial: the differences that can be checked are on the label.

Quick answer

Rejuran, Plinest and Newest are polynucleotide skin boosters: purified DNA fragments injected into the skin. They differ in concentration and in added hyaluronic acid, all three appear on the Malaysian device register, and no trial compares them. None is shown to be better than another.

  • Class: all three are polynucleotides (PN); PDRN is a subset made of smaller fragments.
  • Contents: Rejuran 20 mg/mL PN; Plinest 40 mg in a 2 mL syringe; Newest 10 mg/mL PN plus 10 mg/mL hyaluronic acid.
  • Evidence: small randomised evidence for the class; two Rejuran trials in crow's feet are retracted; the Plinest and Newest studies read had no control group.
  • Quote: it should name the exact product and variant, the millilitres, the sessions, the area and the register number.

What are polynucleotides and PDRN in a skin booster?

Polynucleotides (PN) are chains of purified DNA building blocks, usually taken from salmon or trout and injected into the dermis to improve skin quality. PDRN is the subset made of smaller fragments, and the two names are often used interchangeably. A 2026 systematic review in Cureus found seven randomised trials with 183 participants across skin rejuvenation, scar prevention and wound healing, with the most consistent benefit in wound healing and an evidence base held back by small samples and varied protocols.

The names, the proposed mechanisms and the limits of that evidence are set out in the article on PDRN, polynucleotides and salmon DNA, so they are not repeated here. A polynucleotide booster is a different substance from a hyaluronic acid booster; the article on skinbooster types sorts the groups, and the companion article on hyaluronic acid boosters covers the other side.

What is in Rejuran, Plinest and Newest?

The Malaysian register describes the Rejuran family (Rejuran, Rejuran i and Rejuran s) as an injectable gel of highly purified sodium polynucleotides at 20 mg/mL in a syringe of over 1 mL, placed in the mid to deep dermis. A separate entry, Rejuran HB Plus, combines polynucleotide at 1%, sodium hyaluronate at 1% and lidocaine at 0.3%, and is listed for crow's feet in adults.

Plinest is registered by the same authorised representative as Newest, and the Plinest Hair entry describes its polynucleotides as extracted from fish. In a 2026 study the 2 mL syringe held 40 mg of polynucleotide, which is 20 mg/mL. The family listing includes Plinest Fast, and Plinest One (4 mL at 2 mg/mL) and Plinest Hair are listed separately. Newest is a gel of polynucleotides with hyaluronic acid; a 2026 study gives 10 mg/mL of each with mannitol.

So the labels differ in three ways: the concentration, whether hyaluronic acid is added, and the volume per syringe. Those are facts about the product. They are not facts about the result.

What trials exist for each one?

For Rejuran, the two crow's feet trials comparing it with other fillers are retracted. A 72-patient trial against a hyaluronic acid filler was retracted in 2016, and a 218-person split-face trial against a polycaprolactone filler was retracted in March 2026 because the comparator product had been misidentified. A retracted trial is not evidence either way. What remains in the papers read is a 25-woman split-face study in which Rejuran or saline was injected right after fractional needle radiofrequency. At 6 weeks the polynucleotide side had better pore and wrinkle scores and more hydration, with no difference in dermal thickness or elasticity. That tests it as a recovery add-on, not as a booster on its own.

For Plinest, a 2026 real-world study of 66 adults treated in up to three areas with three sessions reported visible improvement in every facial treatment on clinician rating, 53.5% of them marked or excellent, and 97 to 100% patient satisfaction, with no serious adverse events. There was no control group, and the raters were the treating doctors and the patients themselves.

For Newest, a 2026 hospital outpatient study of 30 people with moderate to severe acne scars found the mean scar area fell from 106.6 to 93.1 at 6 months and the scar grade score fell 22.12%, while the grade did not improve in 30%. It was also uncontrolled, and it studied scars, not general skin quality. The three sets of findings concern different uses, so they cannot be laid side by side.

Are they registered in Malaysia?

Yes, as medical devices. A search of the Medical Device Authority register on 21 October 2026 (data updated 20 October) returned entries for the Rejuran family and Rejuran HB Plus, for Plinest, Plinest One and Plinest Hair, and for Newest and Newest One. Their listed purposes differ: the Rejuran family for tissue restoration in the mid to deep dermis, Plinest for skin turgidity and suppleness, Newest for skin appearance, stretch marks and depressed scars.

A register entry shows a device is listed. It does not show that the product works, or that the vial in front of you is genuine; the article on checking a botulinum toxin or skinbooster product explains how to match a box to the register.

Is one of them better than the others?

The evidence does not say. A PubMed search for Rejuran with Plinest and for Plinest with Newest on 21 October 2026 returned no records, so there is no study to rank them. A higher concentration, or added hyaluronic acid, changes what is in the syringe, and no trial read shows that it changes the result.

The clinic offers polynucleotide skinboosters, and which product and how many sessions suit a given skin is decided at assessment, not from a brand comparison. What skinboosters fix, and what they never will and how long skin boosters last cover what to expect. Fish allergy matters for any fish-derived product, and the Rejuran register entry excludes children, adolescents, and pregnant or breastfeeding women.

What should a polynucleotide quote state?

A quote is easier to judge when it names the exact product and variant (for example Rejuran or Rejuran HB Plus, Plinest or Plinest Fast, Newest), the millilitres per session, the number of sessions, the area treated, and who injects. Ask for the register number on the box and check it against the register. Quotes that say only "salmon DNA" or "PN booster" leave out what you are comparing. More on the treatment is on the skinboosters page.

Common questions

What is the difference between Rejuran and Plinest?

Both are polynucleotide injections. On the Malaysian register Rejuran is described as sodium polynucleotides at 20 mg/mL, and Plinest (per its Plinest Hair entry) as polynucleotides extracted from fish, with 40 mg in a 2 mL syringe in a published study. They have different makers and different listed uses, and no trial compares them.

Is Newest the same as Plinest?

No. Newest is a gel of polynucleotides plus hyaluronic acid (10 mg/mL of each in a published study), listed for skin appearance, stretch marks and depressed scars. Plinest contains polynucleotides without added hyaluronic acid. Both come from the same maker, Mastelli.

Is Rejuran better than Plinest?

The evidence does not say. No trial has compared them, and the Rejuran crow's feet trials that did compare it with other fillers are retracted. A higher concentration on a label does not by itself show a better result.

Are polynucleotide boosters registered in Malaysia?

Rejuran, Rejuran HB Plus, Plinest, Plinest One, Plinest Hair and Newest all appear on the Medical Device Authority register as medical devices. Registration shows a device is listed, not that it works for a given concern. The register can be searched by the public.

Is a polynucleotide booster the same as Profhilo or Skinvive?

No. Profhilo and Skinvive are hyaluronic acid products, while polynucleotides are purified DNA fragments. The article on skinbooster types explains the three groups, and the companion article on hyaluronic acid boosters compares Profhilo and Skinvive.

Who should not have polynucleotide injections?

The register entry for the Rejuran family says it is not for children, adolescents, or pregnant or breastfeeding women. Fish allergy is a caution for any fish-derived polynucleotide, and an active skin infection in the area means waiting. Suitability is confirmed at assessment.
